Welcome to the Bressay History Group Website
Who are we?
We are a group of like-minded people with a desire to explore and record the
past history and archaeology of the Islands of Bressay and Noss. The Group started
in 1990 and, through the gift of a building site and grants from European Regional
Development Fund and Shetland Islands Charitable Trust, were able to build a
Heritage Centre. The Heritage Centre holds our collection and archives and enables
us to hold an annual exhibition on aspects of the Islands history, archaeology
and biodiversity.
We have carried out projects on mapping archaeological sites on the Island;
recorded all the buildings and people resident; collected over 2000 photographs
of past inhabitants; recorded information about particular events or people
and hold an annual exhibition, lectures and presentations on historical issues
relevant to the Island and its people.
Our Aims
Our Aims are to collect and record as much historical data as possible; to
explore and record archaeological sites throughout the Islands of Bressay and
Noss; to encourage interest and participation by the local community; to share
our findings with anyone who is interested.
