Creation of farms in Bressay

In spite of John Walker’s removal the policy of developing viable farms in Bressay proceeded.

In 1872 the farm of Setter, including Aith, was let to Simon Anderson.

In 1875 the lands of Cullingsbrough, Noss Sound and Anderhill were made over to Maryfield Farm, and in the same year Grimsetter was removed from the scattald and let to James Sutherland.

1878 Hoversta Farm was created out of the crofts of Hoversta/Waterloo and Gunhaa. The first tenant was James Sutherland.

All crofting tenants on these lands lost their holdings and grazings. Some of the affected tenants went to existing crofts, others were allocated scattald land to break in and create a croft. It appears that tenants could remain in their homes until these new crofts were habitable. Most of these outset crofts were in the Uphouse/Seaview/Pettifirth area.
