Death of Mrs Cameron Mouat

THE SATURDAY HERALD AND SHETLAND GAZETTE

Kirkwall, Saturday, August 5th 1871.

Death of Mrs Cameron Mouat. – Mrs Margaret Cameron Mouat, of Garth, one of the largest landowners in Shetland, died on Tuesday morning at her house at Gardie in the island of Bressay – of which island she was sole owner – at the advanced age of 92 years. The death of this venerable and much respected lady has been awaited with mournful anticipations by the whole tenantry of the large isle of Bressay, who not unreasonably dread the advent of the new regime, which for the last ten years has been threateningly promised them. Great astonishment was expressed in Lerwick to see, immediately after Mrs Mouat’s death, a flag displayed from one of the most elevated points in Bressay, where it floated as if in triumph for the greater part of the day. This unbecoming exhibition, however, was put a stop to in the afternoon.

The remains of the deceased lady are to be taken to Unst, there to be laid by her late husband – Captain Cameron of Garth. Her son – Major Thomas Mouat Cameron, of Garth and Annsbrae – succeeds his mother in the rest of the family estates.
