Death of Mrs Cameron Mouat

THE SATURDAY HERALD AND SHETLAND GAZETTE

Kirkwall, Saturday, September 23rd 1871.

(Shetland News – Lerwick – September 18th)

The excitement in Bressay is every day getting worse, and it is reported as the result of the new decree, that one man has been brought over here quite deranged. On the 10th instant there were only a mere handful of people at the Parish Church, out of a population of about 1000, and there is no other place of worship in the isle. This is believed to be entirely owing to the mental excitement caused by the sudden and what is considered oppressive measures proposed to be put in force at next term. The people do not know where to go. Some have agreed for a season, but the majority have declined to accept the proposed terms.
